Little Darlin' - Goodnight Studio à Los Angeles

English translation by J. Sommers

Keith Olsen remembers Sheila very well. He mentions aa easy going woman with whom working was a joy with a lot of complicity. He produced her album and had previously been a producer for Fleetwood Man, Pat Benatar, Santana, Scorpions and many others.

"I hoped it would show her a different way to record and another way to apprehend her art. I also hoped that she would be more invested in her own career. She's a very talented woman who needed back then, I think, to get more involved and in charge and I do believe that what she's done afterwards." °Extracted from an interview by Keith in Sheila a life.

Claude Carrère got in contact with Keith through Bob Buziak. Producers gave the necessary means to create a well finished job. Lisa, the voice assistant, had Sheila work on her English/American accent and managed to get rid of the singer's vocal mishaps. Indeed, when one listens to the record without knowing who sings, nobody recognizes Sheila and feedback is usually positive which proves on the contrary that Sheila was somehow a prisoner of her own image.

It's an uncommon record for Sheila. Inside there's a picture of her with all her musicians on the LP: Mike Baird, drums, Rick Phillips, bass, Richard Page and Tom Kelly, back-up singers, Bill Champlin keyboards, Tim Pierce, guitar. The recording was done at the Goodnight Studio in Los Angeles. Holly Knoght, Tom Kelly and David Foster wrote the song. They had collaborated with Olivia Newton-John and would work later with Céline Dion. Other names are Jay Graydon, Chas Sanford and Ian Thomas.

Guitars are prominent on Waiting for the night, a rather good Westcoast production. One has to understand that what characterizes this label is its typical West Coast sound and everything it means, a good soft rock Californian vibe.

A guitar riff was on Waiting for the night, which is a good Westcoast production as this label has a typical West US Coast sound especially a Californian soft rock sound.

Sheila has worked on her voice. Keith said to her: "I want it to come from within." It's therefore as well done as the LP produced by Chic. One can notice that while listening to Runner and especially the part "to pass on a flame". Rock suits Dheila well. She succeeded in convincing her audience with her new rock attitude which gives credibility to the LP. There was even a heated debate on French TV in Michel Polac'sDroit De Réponse during which she proved that her opponent hadn't even listened to the record.

Little Darlin', the 1st single, was often broadcast from San Francisco to LA and entered the US Billboard Top 100.

Prisoner could have been a hit but wasn't really exploited as such when released. It wasn't even on the French record and was only added on the 1995 reedition! It was found by some hardcore fans on an English compilation 'Charts Hits 81'. One can help but wonder why?

I'm still believin' has a musical final touch with a seducing guitar solo. Several titles were covered by American artists: Little Darlin' by Rachel Sweet, Runner by Manfred Mann, Prisoner by Sheena Easton. Conversely Stranded was borrowed to Airplay and little Darlin' to Spider with Amanda Blue who co-wrote the title. It's therefore hard to think that the album was exclusively written for Sheila, which doesn't impact the quality of the recording itself. The record sold 140.000 copies.

The American adventure ended abruptly shortly afterwards. Was it marketing or a personal choice by Sheila? It's still strange because the path towards international stardom was very close. Sheila explained in several interviews that it would have been difficult for her to combine her family life and the demanding schedule of an international career. Moreover, she missed France.

After having met all the best artists on the international scene, on TV and elsewhere, having recorded in the most renowned studios, what could she envision for her future? One can understand her stance on wanting to have a new evolution in her career, a more personal one. Strangely enough, rumor has it that she was invited to a party in Bel Air in LA, which she didn't want to attend. Yet she went and met with Yves Martin who would produce her next album, a more personal production that would be acclaimed by the critics in France, the first time in 20 years! Yves was to become her husband and producer. He produced, among others, "Je suiscommetoi", an album recorded at Compass Point in the Bahamas where Sheila met Mick Jagger and Kool and the Gang.

Contrary to Claude Carrère who didn't want Sheila to get on stage, Yves initiated her first show at the Zenith in 1985…A sign of destiny?

"I want to be an artist. I want to be judged for what I am, not for what I've been."

California dream

A very nice video for 'Put it in writing' was directed by David Mallet, who had previously worked among others with David Bowie, Queen, Blondie, Pink Floyd, ACDC, and shows Sheila as far as possible as her regular persona.

The video was only once aired on French TV during Les Visiteurs du Mercredi, (A kid program) when it should have been aired properly on the Music show of the era, 'Les enfants du rock', or at least Platine 45. It was only aired regularly on RTL in André Thorrent's shows: he said before the video was broadcast: "she's so far managed to surprised us, but now Sheila goes even farther".

On Europe 1, she said she hesitated to release the LP in France. Indeed, it was available in September everywhere in the world but the release was postponed to November in France, officially because Sheila feared the reaction people might have had faced with her radical change, but the real reason was that she had to promote her French record 'Une histoire d'amour'¸ which she hated and of which she got rid quickly.

Her look changed and came from California fashion trends. She opted for straight blond hair. On most of the TV shows she would appear with a bandana on the forehead with many colors as it was fashionable back then. She especially went a lot to Italy on RAI channel and in Germany for the show Musikladen (which were broadcast many years later on the French cable network TéléMélody. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, designed all of her clothes.

Sheila met Björn Borg in 1981 in a hotel while she was recording her American album. They even played tennis and he said that she was very gifted: "she has nerve and doesn't hold back". They went out together, in museums, at parties, struck a pose for the photographers. Sheila in her novel 'Etsic'étaitvrai' suggested that there was an affair, a short-lived one though. A photo interview was shot for Paris Match, which was used by other magazines at the time. Other pictures showed her parties at Regine's.

André Thorrent, whose show Challenger was based on a match opposing two songs, saw Sheila against Dire Straits.

Little Darlin' was directed by David Mallet. She sang it during the Michel Drucker show, Star, at the Pavillon Baltard. She somehow mentioned a possible tour for the end of 1982 or the beginning of 1983. It's regrettable that those quality videos were not more widely broadcast is France. The single sold 80.000 copies though.

Prisoner was also sung by Cher who is regularly found on Sheila's path. The music was different and far from the one sung by Sheila. The song was also covered by Sheena Easton the same year. Stranded was taken from Airplay and little darlin' from Spider with Amanda Blue, which shows that Little Darlin' had a large audience in the US. Prisoner was only discovered in France on an English compilation, Ktel, and in 1995, the title was surprisingly on a French disco compilation: Les Années Disco. One can't help but wonder why.

Rock & Folk gave raving reviews considering the high quality of the LP. At the end of 1981, the Sheila newspaper was issued for the last time.

Sheila was approached in 1982 to go on a European tour but her producer didn't follow suit. Tracks were made and broadcast years later in 2006 on the official promotional site for her complete works.

Little Darlin'
(Holly night / Amanda Blue) 3'56

Would you know me in a passing crowd ?
Lonely faces that once were ours
From the moment that I caught your eye
I felt my loneliness fly
Tell me
Would you know me ?
Show me
There's no need to be afraid

Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
Oh little darlin'
Never leave me no never ?
Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?

Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na

You know it's empty out on the street
But there was magic where we used to meet
A year ago I didn't know your name
Cause I was out there playing silly games
Hold me
For a moment
I'm here with you
And everything just disappears

Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
Oh little darlin'
Never leave me no never ?
Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?

Na na na na na na

Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
Oh little darlin'
Never leave me no never ?
Oh little darlin'
Would you love me for ever ?
...

It's only make believe
(Tom Kelly) 3'24

Doctor, doctor, please
I don't wanna lose my fantasies
Since he's come and gone
It's the only way I can carry on

I can close my eyes
And pretend he's here beside me
He never said goodbye
Oh, he's hoplessly so in love with me

I don't wanna lose this dream I've started
Oh no, no

Doctor, doctor
And though it's only make believe
Living with you all night
Doctor, doctor
He touched me with his eyes again

We'll go on in style
My imagination running wild
All my eyes can see
Is a vision of him right here with me

I don't wanna lose this dream I've started
Oh no, no

Doctor, doctor
And though it's only make believe
Living with you all night
Doctor, doctor
He touched me with his eyes again

Doctor, doctor
I'll keep it like it used to be
Living with you all night
Doctor, doctor
I'm crazy but he's here with me

I don't wanna lose this dream, no
I don't wanna lose this dream, oh no

He'll be holding me tight
Making love to me in the candle light

Doctor, doctor
And though it's only make believe
Living with you all night
Doctor, doctor
He touched me with his eyes again

Doctor, doctor
I'll keep it like it used to be
Living with you all night
Doctor, doctor
I'm crazy but he's here with me

Doctor, doctor
And though it's only make believe
Living with you all night
Doctor, doctor
He touched me with his eyes again.

Stranded
(David Foster / Jay Graydon - Tom Kelly) 4'08

You are dealing underhanded

So far the closer that we get the more I'm stranded

I'm tangled in a situation
And now you've got the best of me
I'm handing in my resignation
I'm suffering a cold defeat all alone

I tell you secrets and you're telling me lies
You paint a picture then you cover my eyes
And since I found you, I've been lost in the night
Feelin' stranded, stranded
Empty handed
And I don't know how I'll ever survive
First you want to please me
Then you want to tease me
Lead me to your lock and throw away the only key

You are dealing underhanded
So far the closer that we get the more I'm stranded

I'm taking on a bad reaction
From putting on a one-man show
You never give me satisfaction
I can't hold on, I can't let go on your love

I tell you secrets and you're telling me lies
You paint a picture then you cover my eyes
And since I found you, I've been lost in the night
Feelin' stranded, stranded
Empty handed
And I don't know how I'll ever survive
First you want to please me
Then you want to tease me
Lead me to your lock and throw away the only key

First you want to please me
Then you want to tease me
Lead me to your lock and throw away the only key

I'm tangled in a situation
And now you've got the best of me
I'm handing in my resignation
I'm suffering a cold defeat
Such a cold defeat
Over and over the closer I get to you
You are dealing underhanded
So far the closer that we get I'm stranded

You are dealing underhanded
So far the closer that we get I'm stranded
You are dealing underhanded
So far the closer that we get I'm stranded
Over and over the closer I get to you.

I'm still believin'
(Tom Kelly / Bill Champlin) 5'26

Moments after you left me standing there at the door
I felt so empty, all alone
Something tells me that we've both been here before
That's when you call me on the phone
Boy, you can get me crying by denying everything

But I...
I'm still believin'
Believin' that you're still in love with me
You tell me you're leavin'
Well, I know you'll be bringing it home to me
I'm still believin', I'm still believin'
I still believe in you and I know you believe in me

I see it happen every time you walk away
You've always had your need to roam
So live with your night life and when you find the light of day
Loneliness will lead you home
Boy, you can get me cryin' by denying everything

But I...
I'm still believin'
Believin' that you're still in love with me
You tell me you're leavin'
Well, I know you'll be bringing it home to me
I'm still believin', I'm still believin'
I do believe in you
I'm still believin', I'm still believin'
I believe in you and I know you believe in me

I'm still believin'
Believin' that you're still in love with me
You tell me you're leavin'
Believin' that our love will always be
I'm still believin', I'm still believin'
I believe in you, baby
I'm still believin', I'm still believin'
I believe in you and I know you believe in me.

Prisoner
(John Desautels / Karen Lawrence) 3'24

I'm a prisoner, just a prisoner

Time has come to say goodbye
To broken memories
They're locked inside like prisoners
In a place where no one sees

I'm a prisoner
Don't want to lock myself away
Just a prisoner
Lonely, lonely
I'm a prisoner
Just when you think love will stay
Walks right out on you, out on you, out on you

Stayed up late with a friend of mine
Ol' southern comfort till dawn
We talked about the pains of love
Shoulda' know from the start you were wrong

I'm a prisoner
Don't want to lock myself away
Just a prisoner
Lonely, lonely
I'm a prisoner
Just when you think love will stay
Walks right out on you, out on you, out on you

The sky is gray, it's rainin'
Like the storm in my heart
There ain't no use explainin'
Cause I'm leavin', leavin'

I'm a prisoner
Don't want to lock myself away
Just a prisoner
Lonely, lonely
I'm a prisoner
Just when you think love will stay
Walks right out on you, out on you

Tired blood runs through my veins
But I can't get no sleep
You locked my heart in these prison walls
This place I got to leave

I'm a prisoner
Don't want to lock myself away
Just a prisoner
Lonely, lonely
I'm a prisoner
Just when you think love will stay
Walks right out on you, out on you
...

Put it in writing
(Tom Kelly / Kerry Hatch) 3'40

Will you stand beside me
Whether I am right or I am wrong ?
Will you still love me
When the stormy weather comes along ?
If there's a storm a'comin'
I want a lock on my door

You say you will and then you won't
You say you do and then you don't
Just like you did it before

Put it in writing
Hang it up on the wall
You'll stand beside me
Or I'm all gone

You said it doesn't matter
It isn't for the fortune and the fame
Will you still want me
After all the glory fades away ?
If there's a storm a'comin'
I want that lock on my door

You say you will and then you won't
You say you do and then you don't
You'll be where you where before

Put it in writing
Hang it up on the wall
You'll stand beside me
Or I'm all gone

Put it in writing
Hang it up on the wall
You'll stand beside me
Or I'll be already gone

Put it in writing
Hang it up on the wall
You'll stand beside me
Or I'm gone
Put it in writing
I'm gone
Put it in writing
I'll be gone

You got put it in writing
Put it in writing
I'm gone
I'm gone
Put it in writing
I'm gone
Put it in writing
I'll be gone

Waiting for the night
(Chas Sandford) 3'56

You can drown in the boredom when you tethered to
The nine to five
It's amazing to think of the lenghts that you'll sink
Just to stay alive
All this early to bed and early to rise grind
Feels so out of date
So you plan your escape, but you're biding your time
Cause you'll have to wait

For the nights when you try your luck with the dice
Take to the streets, yeah, you're all out to grab a slice
The sun goes down, you fall victim to the bite
You're only waiting, everybody's waiting for the night

Like a slap in the face you fall into the day
That you'd like to miss
But you dream of the moment when you'll steal away
From a life like this
So you hold a facade cause you're stricken by
A different attitude
You just lie in waiting like a true vampire
Cause you find your fool

In the nights when you try your luck with the dice
Take to the streets, yeah, you're all out to grab a slice
The sun goes down, you fall victim to the bite
You're only waiting, everybody's waiting for the night

Cause the night is the time when you let yourself go
And it feels so right
You work like a dog to try to keep us a show
But you live for the night

For the nights when you try your luck with the dice
Take to the streets, yeah, you're all out to grab a slice
The sun goes down, you fall victim to the bite
You're only waiting, everybody's waiting for the night
Yeah the night

Waiting for the night
Waiting for the night
Waiting for the night

Everybody's
Waiting for the night
Waiting for the night
...

Runner
(Ian Thomas) 3'31

Through the night, through the dawn
Behind you another runner is born
Don't look back, you've been there
Feel the mist as your breath hits the air

And it's underneath the moonlight
Passing some
Till your heart beats in the moonlight
Like a drum
And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
To pass on a flame

Sun come up, sun go down
Hear the feet, see the sweet on the ground
Watch your step, keep your cool
Though you can't see what's in front of you

And it's underneath the moonlight
Passing some
Till your heart beats In the moonlight
Like a drum
And you will run your time
A shooting star accross the sky
And you will surely cross the line
To pass on a flame

Cause you're a runner in a race
Takin' someone's place whose run
You're a runner in a race
And the only way its won
Is to pass on the flame
And you will run your time
A shooting star accross the sky
And you will surely cross the line
To pass on a flame
To pass on a flame
To pass on a flame

You run your time
Accross the sky
You cross the line

You run your time
You run your time
To pass on a flame
Accross the sky
To pass on a flame
You cross the line
...

Nothing less than love
(Steve Diamond / Byron Hill) 3'04

You think that I'm just easy to love
You come to me and you show your stuff
I hear you're good but that don't mean much to me
You got the nerve to come on like this
Don't be so sure that I can't resist
There's just one way to get me to give what you need
It's gonna take

Nothing less than love
Nothing less than love, oh oh
Nothing less than love
If you want me
If you want me
Nothing less than love, oh oh

You think that I will fall like the rest
You played your hand, I'm still not impressed
That's not the way to get the best of me
Don't get me wrong I like what I see
But you talk too fast to mean anything
It's gonna take more for you to get me in your arms
It's gonna take

Nothing less than love
Nothing less than love, oh oh
Nothing less than love
If you want me
Nothing less than love
If you want me
Nothing less than love, oh oh

It's gonna take
Nothing less than love
Nothing less than love, oh oh
Nothing less than love
If you want me

If you want me
If you want me
If you want me
Gonna have your love, your love

Saturday night
(Eric Troyer / David Brown) 3'43

Heaven help the fool
Who tried to get to you ?
Says the gossip that's been flying
All over school
Too scared to make the first move
Cause I carried a crush on you
When I saw you yesterday
You took me by surprise
You said you want to see me on

Saturday night
It's a dream come true
Saturday night
A secret rendez-vous
Saturday night
He said he'd meet me on saturday night
I'm gonna get it on saturday night
He said he wants me on saturday night
Feeling in love
Love will come tumbling down

Now I want you more than ever
You've got me hot on you
I can't wait any longer
So crazy I'm counting the days
Till I can see you on

Saturday night
It's a dream come true
Saturday night
A secret rendez-vous
Saturday night
He said he'd meet me on saturday night
I'm gonna get it on saturday night
He said he wants me on saturday night
Feeling in love
Love will come tumbling down

I lie my eye on you
For such a long time
Didn't think that I had a chance
Everybody's talking
Big surprise !
When they see ya coming to me
While I see him on

Saturday night
It's a dream come true
Saturday night
A secret rendez-vous
Saturday night
He said he'd meet me on saturday night
I'm gonna get it on saturday night
He says he wants me on saturday night
I'm gonna get it on saturday night
He says he wants me on saturday night
I'm gonna get it on saturday night
I'm gonna love it on saturday, saturday night.
